While Ivan is committed to his art, he's just as passionate about Jana (Karolina Gruszka), a beautiful and free-spirited woman who embraces free love with both men and women. While Jana is initially cool to Ivan's advances, she eventually warms to his charm and they become a couple. Ivan and Jana's idyllic time of love and intellectual freedom proves to be short lived; as the Communists take control of Czechoslovakia, Prague's bohemian community is targeted by Stalinists, who object to their lifestyle and philosophy.
